According to the Tampa Bay Times, Tampa Bay’s largest cities have invested hundreds of millions of dollars into strengthening their sewer and stormwater systems.
Due to a rocky history of horrible flooding and damage to infrastructure, especially in the years 2015 and 2016, Tampa Bay has heavily invested in improving their sewer and drainage systems. This work has evidently paid off. Even after the heavy rains of Tropical Storm Elsa, Tampa and St. Petersburg have not sustained any significant damages or road closures.
Tampa’s deputy administrator for infrastructure, Brad Baird, acknowledged this change, stating, “We had no overflows with Elsa. Zero. In large part due to improvements we’ve made since 2016.”
These improvements were made in part by Bob Buckhorn, the former mayor of Tampa. After the damages sustained in 2016, he ordered staff to solve the problem. This prompted the $5 million dollar installation of two miles of pressurized pipes and a pump station in place of the city’s biggest sewage leaking liability. The infrastructure was responsible for nearly 1 million gallons of sewage being diverted during Tropical Storm Elsa.
