One of the things Florida is most known for is: hurricanes. AccuWeather came up with the 5 most know and powerful hurricanes that have hit Florida in the past years.
- Okeechobee Hurricane (1928): Making landfall as a category 4 hurricane near West Palm Beach on Sept 16, it caused over 2,5000 fatalities, most of which were drowning from Lake Okeechobee.
- Hurricane Andrew (1992): Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 165 mph. In Florida, 44 fatalities were reported, 15 direct and 29 indirect.
- Labor Day Hurricane (1935): known as the strongest hurricane to ever make landfall in the U.S, with winds of 185 mph and a storm surge estimated near 18 to 20 feet in portions of the Keys.
- Miami Hurricane (1926) aka “The Great Miami”: similar to the Okeechobee Hurricane, it went from southern to northern Florida making it the second costliest hurricane in U.S history with a total of $100 million damage toll.
- Hurricane Irma (2017): It made landfall on Sept. 10 as a category 4 hurricane. One of the major consequences this hurricane had was causing power outages due to strong winds near 130 mph.
