According to the Pensacola News Journal, the first severe weather threat of the 2021 Hurricane season is coming sooner than you think. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting another active Hurricane season, although it isn’t predicted to match this past year’s intensity. Currently, there is a broad low pressure area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms occurring the Gulf of Mexico and it is expected to evolve into a tropical depression in the coming days. If the storm forms as expected, it will be called Tropical Storm Claudette.
Interim Public Safety Director Eric Gilmore of Escambia County is cautioning residents, telling them to “prepare now for possible flooding and rip currents with this system.” He also shared that “this is the perfect time to make your plans and preparations now to stay safe.” Sandbags are available in Escambia County on a first-come, first-serve basis at select locations.
Stay safe and up to date to make sure you know if a storm is coming. You can do this by tuning into your local TV news stations or by checking The National Weather Service’s website, weather.gov.
