The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is currently monitoring two tropical waves in the Carribean, one of which has the potential of becoming Tropical Storm Gamma over the next week.
A tropical wave has been producing showers and thunderstorms in the western area of the Carribean sea, and is moving northwestward towards tropical development-friendly conditions. The NHC predicts that if it stays within Carribean waters, there is a 40% chance of this developing into a tropical depression within the next two days, with a 70% chance of doing so in the next five days.
If the system moves towards the Yucatan Peninsula or northern Central America, chances are lessened. Whether it develops more or not, experts believe that regardless the system will produce heavy rain and possible flash floods over parts of Central America, southeastern Mexico, and Western Cuba- all within the next few days.
Another tropical wave was located east of the Lesser Antilles, and is producing showers and thunderstorms. The system is projected to move into the western Carribean Sea, with a 20% chance of developing within the following five days. (NHC)
Either of these systems becoming a tropical storm would make for the 24th storm of the year.
