The National Hurricane Center said at 8 a.m. Friday, July 28, 2023, that a tropical depression could form early next week from a system off the coast of Africa.
A tropical wave located southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands off the coast of Africa is expected to become a tropical depression early next week, the National Hurricane Center said.
As of 8 a.m. Friday, odds of the system off the coast of Africa developing over the next seven days increased to 60%. Conditions in the next few days will be favorable for it to develop as it moves west northwestward over the tropical Atlantic, the center’s update said.
Its projected path, though, has it remaining in the Atlantic curling to the north within a week.
The hurricane center is also tracking two other systems, but neither is expected to form into a tropical depression or storm.
An upper-level low in the Caribbean, which is not being monitored for tropical development, is bringing moisture and strong thunderstorms to the Sunshine State. The disorganized showers and thunderstorms off the coast of northeast Florida and Georgia are associated with a weak area of low pressure, prompting flood warnings in South Florida and storms all up the coast.
The next named storm to form would be Emily. The 2023 Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30.
The hurricane center is also tracking a system in the far southwestern Caribbean near Central America with a low chance of formation.
The large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms are a mix of a tropical wave and broad area of low pressure.
