Planning for hurricane season can be a complex process- especially when adding a pandemic into the mix. COVID-19 has changed the way we live, thus changing the way we prepare for natural disasters. As you develop your preparation plan, there are many things to keep in mind. Alter your plan to best fit your current situation that you find yourself in, as both a property owner, and someone going through a pandemic.
Getting essential inventory items and supplies may take much longer than normal, due to the disruption that suppliers have been facing because of COVID-19. Make sure to plan ahead, and figure out the best and most efficient way to get what you need. Making sure you have the right emergency supplies is crucial- but don’t forget post-storm supplies you may need as well. Here’s a list of just some of the items you may need:
- Disinfectants
- Water
- Food
- Batteries
- First Aid
- Masks
- Medications
- Generators
- Fuel
- Plywood
- Tools
It is also critical to remember to practice social distancing, even when in the midst of a storm. This is especially necessary when speaking with or seeing workers such as responders, contractors, etc., or even when checking in on neighbors after a storm to see if they’re alright. Stay at least 6 feet away, and make sure to wear a mask whenever you are near others.
Creating a post-storm plan is also extremely important, especially for business owners. Make sure you have a plan in place that you and those around you understand, so you can try to stay as functional as possible after a storm strikes. Everyone within a business should be prepared and taken care of before a storm, not after.
This 2020 hurricane season has already been quite active, and will most likely continue on the same path- if not stronger, and COVID-19 is still a major issue in our country, affecting our business and homeowners, and everyone in between. Implementing storm prep plans now and getting ready before the next storm hits is critical as ever.
