NOAA Moves Up Atlantic Hurricane Season to May 15

Jun 22, 2021

According to the Tampa Bay Times, over the course of the past six years, named storms have consistently formed before the hurricane season’s June 1st start date. This has given rise to discussions at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration about the validity of that June 1st date.

The 2021 hurricane season is still going to officially start on June 1st, as changes such as these do not happen overnight. However, there is a very likely chance that beginning as early as 2022, hurricane season will have an official start date of May 15th.

First raised at a conference in December of 2020, the issue has sparked conversations and will be reviewed by representatives from the National Hurricane Center, the National Weather Service headquarters and both the eastern and southern National Weather Service headquarters. It is said that they will also be discussing what the actual “quantitative threshold” for such a change is, along with the potential impacts of a calendar change.

This discussion has also initiated conversation at The World Meteorological Organization’s Region IV, where experts are now planning to review the topic at their annual mid-March meeting.

It is no secret that storms have become more frequent and more damaging. Experts considering moving up the hurricane season start date has proven this, and it sends a signal that we should all be taking hurricane preparations more seriously than ever.
