After Hurricane Michael devastated the Panhandle in October, local residents came together at a free community lunch in Mexico Beach
on New Year’s Day according to Panama City News Herald.
Held near the First United Methodist Church, the meal was intended to “raise spirits and bring people together” in a city that still has “debris piles, closed businesses and severely damaged buildings” 83 days after the storm hit.
Those who gathered were optimistic for the year to come. However, some residents like Anna Laluzerne, who volunteered at the community lunch and is a nurse in Panama City, are having difficulty with her insurance company claims. In fact, Panama City News Herald reports that this has “become a familiar story in Bay County.”
