Governor Ron DeSantis is claiming “expeditious recovery efforts” are being made following the extreme aftermath caused by Hurricane Sally. Severe rain hit the western panhandle, as well as storm surge topping at a reported five feet.
“I think you’re going to have to really just get boots on the ground to get the full impact of what happened,” DeSantis said. “Clearly, there were definitely still some areas where it was obvious that you had some major flooding. There are other areas which, from the bird’s eye view, I don’t think probably did full justice to the actual damage that we saw inside the homes.”
40,000 of the 250,000 homes without power in Northwest Florida were restored by Thursday afternoon- just one day after the storm hit. DeSantis claims that additional federal help will be arriving in the next few days, with the U.S. Coast Guard conducting search and rescue operations. The Division of Emergency Management has already deployed 179,000 meals and 972,000 water bottles to residents in Northwest Florida who were under boil-water orders. Residents living in a Santa Rosa County assisted living facility that lost power were being safely relocated. Six bridges are being inspected in order to assess any damage made, and will remain closed until deemed safe.
DeSantis is warning for residents in the affected areas to be precautious as the storm’s aftermath continues to be accessed. “Just understand, if you’re somebody that is just kind of going out to drive to drive, now may not be the best time to do that,” DeSantis said. “It’s really slowing down being able to get all the utility trucks where they need to be.”
