WHYY reports that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) wrongly released the personal information of 2.3 million survivors of hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria and the California wildfires to a contractor that helps in providing temporary housing to those affected by disasters.
Names, last four digits of a Social Security number, bank names, electronic funds transfer numbers and bank transit numbers were provided to this contractor, ultimately putting victims at risk to identity theft.
However, FEMA announced that they’re taking aggressive measures to fix this issue and will change how they deliver information, which will be completed by next year.
