COVID-10’s Effects on Hurricane Evacuation Plans

Oct 4, 2020

COVID-19 may have effects on hurricane evacuation plans this season. Floridians are left worrying about not only the remainder of our active 2020 hurricane season, as well as the coronavirus. University of South Florida researchers are studying how evacuations during a potential hurricane may be impacted by the virus. They are working with various meteorologists and emergency planners to uncover the possible changes that may have to occur.

With the National Hurricane Center having predicted an extremely active storm season for 2020, preparations must be in place in the case of a busy second half of the season. There have been 23 named storms thus far- 20 of which set records for early development.

The study began back in June, and includes Floridians as well as others impacted by Hurricane Laura, with plans to also survey residents who were affected by Hurricane Sally earlier this season. Over half of the Florida residents surveyed expressed concern for coronavirus, stating they felt vulnerable due to pre-existing medical conditions. Over 70% said they felt as though going to a shelter amidst the pandemic would be more dangerous than a hurricane itself. Research is showing that many Floridans would choose to not go to an evacuation center this season due to the pandemic.

The research that has been conducted thus far presents concerns that emergency planners and others throughout Florida will consider while attempting to reevaluate storm planning and safety strategies. Researchers are hoping that it will also encourage local officials to learn more about what their residents need as we navigate through the second half of hurricane season.

Researchers are hoping to also convey to residents that while coronavirus is a threat, hurricanes can be extremely dangerous, and are not to be ignored or taken lightly simply because of the pandemic. Shelters are preparing while taking COVID-19  into consideration.
