Although it’s been more than 18 months since Hurricane Matthew hit Volusia and Flagler Counties, The Daytona Beach News-Journal shares that Ormond Beach and other cities are still waiting to be repaid for hurricane cleanup costs. In fact, the most recent report shows that more than $27 million remains unpaid.
“When a federally declared emergency occurs, cities have to pay upfront to remove debris, repair property, and for other cleanup costs. While the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Public Assistance grant program reimburses affected cities for much of those costs afterward, officials have said the process is painfully slow.”
