Two local tech industry workers – Nicholas Casassa and Mike Rogers of Branch Networks – took matters into their own hands after Hurricane Michael wiped out all communications systems. As Panama City News Herald explains, the two techs put their years of experience to use with setting up their own far-reaching Wi-Fi networks so neighbors could contact their loved ones.
The pair boosted the network’s reach. Neighbors were in Rogers’ front yard using the internet. One day, they had 250 clients on their network.
“One of my neighbor’s wife is from Japan. She wasn’t able to talk to her parents since the storm. They were able to come out front, use the Wi-Fi and call the family and tell them they were OK.”
“It feels to good help,” said Casassa. We were just happy to do our part for our community. Everybody was feeding everybody, everybody was helping clear brush. We were helping people get access.”
