One of the biggest concerns and hazards during hurricane season is flooding caused by the amount of rain that occurs during such a short period of time. Because of this, News 6 Orlando has come up with 5 measures that homeowners can take to protect their homes from flooding this year:
- Check to see if you live in a flood zone or an area prone to flooding: The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has created official flood maps which are continually updated for the safety of homeowners. By checking this maps regularly and being aware of your area flood map you can take the necessary precautions in the case of a storm or hurricane.
- Purchase flood insurance: Flood insurance can be purchased by anyone, even when you live in an area where it is not federally required. It is important to understand the insurance coverage and the time it takes to go in effect.
- Prepare before the storm hits: Stay alert on the latest hurricane developments in your area. Prepare your home with the necessary equipment to protect yourself and your residence from flooding
- Store supplies so you can grab them quickly if you need to evacuate: it is important to include things like documents, medications and perishable food.
- Evacuate if necessary:In the case that authorities ask for evacuation it is important to do so immediately and return only when authorities say it is safe.
