This 2020 hurricane season has been far from quiet. The Atlantic hurricane season has now moved on to the Greek alphabet, with a possible 24th named storm coming in the next few days.
There is currently a system moving north towards the Yucatan Peninsula and west of Cuba with the possibility of it becoming the 24th named storm of this 2020 season. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has given the system a 70% chance developing into a named storm within the next five days. If this happens, it will receive the name Tropical Storm Gamma.
While this system is not expected to become a major hurricane, it is still being monitored closely by the NHC.
This is only the second time in recorded history that the NHC has had to resort to the Greek alphabet because the original 21 names have been used. With the season continuing until November 30th and the possibility of storms forming even after that date, this season is definitely one to continue keeping an eye on.
In past Atlantic hurricane seasons, there have typically been only 3 named storms in the months of October and November, however this year we are seeing a much more active season. We have seen a total of 23 named storms so far this season, when the average for an entire is typically 12 storms total. 20 of the 23 storms this season have set records for the earliest named storm in recorded history.
